Title

Singles to Doubles

One thing I am trying to do on drums lately is break an old habit. It is not a bad habit but it is something that could save me a lot of energy in the future.

We all play single strokes (RLRL) because that is very natural. If you play double strokes (RRLL) you get benefits that add up substantially over a set.

RLRL RLRL RLRL RLRL = 16 movements of wrist/arms
RRLL RRLL RRLL RRLL = 8 movements of wrist/arms

That adds up so I am consciously trying to convert where possible. It is tough though. There are decades of muscle memory to wade against. It is happening though.

Besides saving energy there is one more benefit which is positioning. While the left hand is doing its LL, your right hand has time to move to where it needs to go. I noticed that with the doubles, things are a little calmer because there is less of a feeling of rushing to the next drum or cymbal. The way I visualize it is that I am not running to catch the beat because I am already at the stop.

This is what I like about drums. There is infinite things to try and meditate on.
