I've been a bit obsessed with left, right, both, and kick on drums lately. By that I mean those are the choices. So when I am playing and a transition is coming up quickly, I try to pop up some simple set of L,R,B, and or K in my mind (ex: RLRK). I don't try to imagine where to play it. I just do that RLRK over and over wherever my hands are. Then, while doing RLRK, I try to get my hands where they need to be for the next part.
So for rehearsal, I generated a list of all the possible combinations of left, right, both, and kick. I keep a set of drumsticks at my desk and when there are moments (file uploads, watching videos, etc.), I run through these slowly. There is something cool about each one of them.
Speed will follow when the mechanism of the movements is more assured.
I am finding that choosing a line (column, row) and playing them is a good challenge. Another is choosing one and then picking an adjacent one that is diagonal from it and wandering around. Since I am also working on my ghost notes, I accent the first note and ghost the rest that are hands (L,R, or B).
Enjoy!
